Why Are Some of Us Born Without Wisdom Teeth?

Why Are Some of Us Born Without Wisdom Teeth?

Let us break the old myth that wisdom tooth appears only when we receive knowledge or wisdom. The age-old English proverb is nothing but a myth. This has been proved wrong when a great scientist like Einstein were also some of the renowned people without the wisdom tooth. On the contrary, the size of the brain has a direct connection with a molar, moreover, evolution and genetics also play a major role in the appearance of a molar tooth.

Age of 17 or 18 is the normal time when one starts to develop the wisdom tooth. Do you know that only 35% of humans have Wisdom Teeth? The latest research foundation in America has conducted a survey about the oral health and revealed that not everyone has the wisdom tooth, or some may have but not visible. Wisdom tooth is third molars. On average humans have four wisdom teeth, one for each quarter of the mouth. Sometimes, the wisdom tooth will develop later, but in some cases, the tooth may not develop at all.

Scientists and doctors attribute many reasons, why many people do not have wisdom tooth. Evolution says that, whichever part of the body, you do not use over a period of time, gets diminished gradually. It is very important to connect man’s primitive stage with the current generation’s growth of tooth.

  • Wisdom tooth will not develop when it is not given enough pressure to grow. It requires the adequate amount of strenuous pressure and force from inside the mouth. They remain dormant under the jawbone. For many people in their lifetime, the jawbone may not be developed at all. It even never emerges. So it is evident that it is not mandatory that everyone should have wisdom teeth.

  • Evolution and genetics play a major role in the appearance of wisdom tooth. As the brain becomes larger over generations, it is not having enough space to accommodate the tooth. Thus, giving space for the brain to develop shrinking the tooth.

  • As we were mainly using the first and second molars, we are not using the last molar teeth. The lack of the last set of the tooth, will not have a direct effect on the way the food is being eaten. Primitive man needed the molar, as most of the food was not cooked and to be eaten raw, but now as the food becomes more processed, it is not necessary to exert great pressure to eat, hence molar teeth are not that highly important.

It is clear and evident that, people need not worry if they do not have their wisdom teeth visible, it will not hinder the efficiency of chewing and eating. Many people also consider the absence of the wisdom tooth as a blessing. Many times it becomes crooked and catches the infection. It also affects the tooth nearby, by spreading the infections to the tooth nearby.  Even if the tooth appears normal, over a period of time it becomes vulnerable to infections. Many people get their tooth removed before their age of twenty, much even before the tooth emerges to grow bigger. People with wisdom teeth should also be clear to take the doctor’s advice. As they are prone to infection and causes severe pain, consult your doctor to get your wisdom tooth removed.
